Recent studies reveal the benefits of dancing, even some going as far as suggesting a better effect than antidepressants for treating depression! Dancing’s holistic nature combines several therapeutic elements simultaneously and without any negative side effects!
Key Benefits From Dancing:
· Neurochemical Release – Dancing triggers the release of endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin (also known as the “feel good” neurotransmitters) which naturally boost mood and reduce stress.
· Mindfulness / Mind Body Connection – Dancing engages both the mind and the body which can help break cycles of obsessional or negative thought patterns by focusing attention on the present moment and the rhythm of the music. Even better, attending a choreographed dance session purposefully engages the mind in deliberate movements that require concentration and memory.
· Emotional Expression – Dance provides an outlet for emotional release and self-expression, which can be particularly helpful for individuals who struggle to articulate their feelings in traditional talk therapy settings.
· Social Interaction – Many forms of dancing involve a social or group component, which helps combat feelings of isolation and builds a sense of community and belonging – contributing to mental wellbeing.
· Health Benefits – Dancing can improve cardiovascular health, enhances cognitive function, and boosts self-esteem, contributing to overall well-being.
